New Delhi, October 30, 2025 — The India–Sweden Mining Day 2025, scheduled for October 31, 2025 at Business Sweden office New Delhi, will bring together key industry leaders, policymakers, and technology innovators to explore new opportunities for collaboration in digitalization and sustainable mining. The event is organized under the India–Sweden Mining Platform, established in 2022, which serves as a cornerstone for bilateral cooperation in the mining and mineral sector.
India, with its vast reserves of iron ore, aluminum, zinc, and other critical minerals, continues to position mining as one of the most important sectors of its economy. As industrialization and urbanization accelerate, the Government of India has introduced several reforms to enhance mine productivity and ensure environmental sustainability. Sweden, known for its cutting-edge mining technology, automation solutions, and sustainability-driven practices, has emerged as a natural partner in India’s mining transformation journey.
Partnership Announcement
The event will open with remarks by Sofia Högman, Trade Commissioner of Sweden to India, followed by a welcome address from Jan Thesleff, Ambassador of Sweden to India. Sara Modig, State Secretary, Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, Sweden, will deliver the keynote address as Guest of Honor, highlighting Sweden’s vision for global sustainability partnerships.
A highlight of the session will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the TEXMiN Foundation (DST, Government of India, ISM Dhanbad) and Business Sweden. This MoU aims to advance digital innovation and sustainability in mining, focusing on competitiveness, safety, and green technology integration. The session will also include presentations by Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, on the role of academia in strengthening India’s mining competitiveness and sustainability.
Panel Discussion on Digitalization and Sustainable Automation
The second session will feature a high-level panel discussion on the digital transformation of the Indian mining sector, focusing on challenges and opportunities in automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
As part of India’s push for a modern and sustainable mining ecosystem under the National Mineral Policy 2019 and the National Critical Mineral Mission, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), robotic systems, and autonomous mining fleets is reshaping industry standards. These initiatives are expected to boost operational efficiency, improve safety, and reduce environmental impact.
The discussion will feature leading voices from the sector, including:
Vijay Upreti, Regional Manager, South Asia, Guideline Geo
Vivek Kumar Agarwal, Head Improvement, OMQ, Tata Steel Limited
Gouranga Sen, Group Head – Economic & Policy Analysis, Vedanta Ltd.
Chandu Rao, Managing Director, Epiroc India & General Manager, Epiroc Innovation & Technology Center (EITC)
Pavan Kolahal, Enterprise Sales – Oceania, Asia, and India, Ericsson
The session will be moderated by Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, ensuring an engaging dialogue on how digital technologies and automation can accelerate India’s path toward sustainable mining.
Building a Greener, Smarter Mining Future
Through initiatives like the India–Sweden Mining Platform and the India–Sweden Mining Day 2025, both countries are reinforcing their shared vision for a green transition, combining Sweden’s technological expertise with India’s growing mining potential. The collaboration promises to deliver real impact — from lowering carbon emissions to enabling a safer, smarter, and more inclusive mining ecosystem.
