The Mountain Roared But Brought Forth a Mouse" - Greek Fabulist, Aesop

Updated: May 6

In the wake of Canada’s recent federal elections and the ascent of Mark Carney as the new Prime Minister, Kam Rathee a respected Canada - India business consultant offers a pointed and thought-provoking commentary. Drawing parallels from classical wisdom and modern political dynamics, Rathee critiques the strategies of the major parties, reflects on the implications of another minority mandate, and outlines the potential impact of new leadership on Canada’s domestic and international posture. His opinion piece follows in full

The above quoted Greek fable can be attributed to the recently concluded Canadian Federal elections. Riding on the fear mongering coattails of Trump’s “bark is worst than his bite”, the liberals skillfully, but with abject failure, tried to fear monger the public into garnering a majority. They could not break the jinx of the Trudeau repeated minority mandates, notwithstanding the aping of the conservative platform of axing the carbon tax, capital gains, etc.  Minus all of this, the conservatives could have romped home with a majority. However, good things come to those who wait. The wait may not be that long as the minority Government may not last its mandate, bereft of the Machiavellian support of a sidelined NDP and its cantankerous and defeated leader.

However, every cloud has a silver lining, and the Liberals have at least two, if not more. First, hopefully, it will keep its nose and skirt clean by not interfering into the affairs of other nations (before looking itself in the mirror) or give open or tacit support to groups or bodies of that ilk, propagating the break-up of other nations. Secondly, drop the attitude of know it all (“too clever by half”) and make friends and do business with others, not succumbing into the act of looking for easy solutions to difficult problems. This includes putting all its eggs in one economic basket. As the Trump façade unravels, sooner than later, the conservatives will come out the winner, having not swayed with the wind and having kept a steady hand on the political, social and economic pulse of the nation.

As a prologue, the Liberals have no doubt taken advantage of offering a new face to the electorate who in the persona of, Mark Carney, has replaced a tired and tarred Trudeau. The experience, economic heft and horse sense of the new leader should put the party in good stead and as he is not likely to fall a victim of internecine warfare. Not succumbing to the of grunt of politics will be the litmus test !
