India's renewable story is shifting from megawatts to manufacturing. As BRES 2026 brings 75,000+ delegates to Delhi alongside the ISA Assembly and Green Hydrogen Conference, the real question isn't how much solar India installs — it's whether it can build the batteries, panels, and factories to own the supply chain.

Climate change may have started the renewable revolution. Geopolitics is now vehemently accelerating it. The irony remains inconvenient because, while the world is trying to escape one set of dependencies, it is eventually entering another.


Oil and gas once defined influence. Now the contest is moving towards batteries, critical minerals, solar cells, electrolysers, semiconductors, storage and the manufacturing capacity needed to turn sunlight and wind into dependable power.


The next energy superpowers may not be the countries sitting on the biggest oil reserves. Instead, the countries that manufacture the machines, control the supply chains and finance the infrastructure of the clean-energy age will be remarkably ahead. India aims to position itself in the centre of this reality.


The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026, scheduled for November 2 to 5 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, is rooted in a larger Indian ambition. New Delhi wants to move from being a huge consumer of energy technologies to becoming a country that helps build, manufacture, finance and shape the energy system the world will depend on next, which is a much bigger game.


From Renewable Summit to Global Energy Convergence


The scale of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 suggests that India is now thinking beyond being a participant in the global clean-energy transition.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that the summit will be held from 2 to 5 November at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, bringing together the BRE Summit & Expo, the 9th Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen on a single platform.

With invitations extended to 34 countries for the summit and 128 countries for the ISA Assembly, the event is clearly being positioned as more than an industry gathering. It is an attempt to convene governments, investors, technology companies, manufacturers and innovators around the emerging clean-energy economy. Joshi's emphasis on India's approaching 300 GW of installed non-fossil-fuel capacity and the rapid expansion of rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar scheme reinforces the message at the heart of India's renewable pitch: the country is no longer merely participating in the global energy transition; instead, it wants to shape its direction and rules.


By combining the BRE Summit with the ISA Assembly and the Green Hydrogen Conference, India is effectively putting three of the defining conversations of the clean-energy age: solar power, hydrogen and the wider renewable-energy economy on the same diplomatic and commercial stage.


The timing is even more critical as India is approaching the landmark of 300 GW of installed non-fossil-fuel capacity, while the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is expected to cross 50 lakh beneficiary households. These developments allow New Delhi to present its renewable story not simply as an aspiration, but as an increasingly demonstrable record of execution.


No Longer Just a Climate Story


The transformation in India's renewable sector has been extraordinary. The country added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil-fuel capacity in FY 2025–26, almost twice the previous annual record of 29.5 GW set in FY 2024–25. Solar power has exploded from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to 150.26 GW by March 2026.


India's solar manufacturing capacity has reportedly expanded roughly 75-fold since 2014, from 2.3 GW to around 172 GW, pointing to where the real battle is heading. For years, India's renewable-energy story was largely a story of installation. How many gigawatts could be added? How quickly could solar panels be deployed? How much could the country reduce its dependence on fossil fuels? Now the questions are changing.


The modern set of questions is: Who makes the panels? Who produces the batteries? Who controls the electrolysers? Who owns the intellectual property? Who processes the minerals? Who finances the projects? Who builds the transmission lines? The clean-energy transition is becoming an industrial contest disguised as a climate project. And this is precisely where BRES 2026 enters the picture.


Its evolution from the RE-Invest platform is telling. The 2024 edition in Gandhinagar attracted more than 50,000 delegates and generated commitments for 570 GW of additional renewable-based installed capacity, alongside investment commitments of INR 32.45 lakh crore.


Investment commitments are easy to celebrate and harder to build. A pledge is not a power plant. A memorandum is not a factory. And a commitment is not a megawatt. The real question now is whether India can turn the enthusiasm surrounding renewable energy into an industrial machine that keeps running long after the BRE Summit's lights go out.


India Is Moving Beyond Megawatts


Adding solar capacity is relatively straightforward. Making that electricity available at midnight is not. Producing renewable power is one challenge. Storing it economically is another. India's renewable challenge is therefore no longer simply about generating more electricity; it is also about building an entire system around it.


Storage, green hydrogen, artificial intelligence, digitalisation, hybrid renewable systems and advanced technologies are becoming as important as solar and wind themselves. The countries that win the next energy race will be those capable of connecting all these pieces, and here lies the geopolitical twist.


A country can have endless sunshine and still remain technologically dependent. It can have enormous renewable potential and still import the equipment needed to exploit it. It can become a global leader in installed capacity while capturing only a fraction of the economic value created by the transition. India aims to break free of that model.


The emerging ambition is capturing more of the value chain, which can be done by manufacturing rather than merely importing. The phrase "curtain raiser" therefore carries a vital message. India wants investment, certainly. But it also wants the factories.


The Next Oil Shock May Come With a Battery Label


The world has spent decades worrying about dependence on fossil fuels, only to discover that dependence can return in a greener form. Recent geopolitical shocks have proven that concentrated supply chains are vulnerabilities waiting to become crises. Solar manufacturing, batteries, critical minerals, semiconductors and electrolysers are therefore becoming vital assets, meaning the energy transition may reduce dependence on oil and gas while creating new dependencies on the countries that control the technologies and raw materials behind renewable systems.


For India, this presents both an opportunity and a warning. New Delhi has a huge market, rising electricity demand, abundant solar potential, a growing manufacturing base and considerable credibility across the developing world, yet it must balance the fastest possible expansion of clean energy with the slower, harder task of building domestic capabilities. The geopolitical challenge is to scale rapidly without simply replacing one form of dependence with another.


Three Summits, One Message


The convergence of BRES 2026 with the 9th International Solar Alliance Assembly and the 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen gives the event a significance beyond that of a conventional trade exhibition. The ISA provides India with a diplomatic platform, green hydrogen opens an industrial and technological frontier, while BRES connects both through investment, manufacturing and deployment.


Together, they allow India to make a larger proposition to the Global South, whose countries need more electricity and industrialisation but cannot afford to replicate the fossil-fuel-heavy development path of the past. India's opportunity is to become the bridge between capital, technology and developing-world demand, positioning itself not merely as a market for clean technologies but as a country that helps shape the ecosystem around them. In spaces like these, renewable energy becomes foreign policy.


BRES 2026 is expected to bring together more than 75,000 participants, 400 exhibitors, 500 speakers and over 80 technical and policy sessions, but the real test will begin once the exhibition closes. Can investment commitments become factories, can manufacturing produce globally competitive companies, can storage transform the grid, and can green hydrogen move beyond pilot projects into commercially viable industry?


India's own solar story shows what technological disruption can achieve. In 2010, electricity discovered through the country's first competitive solar auction cost around INR 17.91 per unit, while by 2020 some auctions were recording tariffs below INR 2. The lesson is that technologies considered expensive today can rapidly redraw the economic map when innovation, competition and scale converge.


India therefore has a narrow window. If it moves too slowly, it risks becoming a vast market for somebody else's clean-energy products. If it moves strategically, it could emerge as one of the manufacturing and technology centres of the new energy economy.


India's Renewable Moment Is Really a Power Question


India's energy transition is often presented as a story of climate responsibility, but it is equally a story about power. Energy shapes manufacturing costs, manufacturing determines competitiveness, technology influences autonomy, and resilient supply chains translate into geopolitical influence.


The BRES 2026 is an attempt to align industrial policy with international diplomacy and clean-energy deployment with manufacturing. The International Solar Alliance has already given India a distinctive diplomatic identity, while green hydrogen could strengthen its industrial proposition, with BRES potentially serving as the platform that connects the two.


The world once fought over oil fields. Tomorrow's contests will revolve around batteries, minerals, grids, hydrogen and the technologies that turn sunlight into industrial power. India has spent the last decade proving it can build renewable capacity. The next decade will reveal whether it can build renewable power.
